Artist Statement Landscapes

This body of work is very different to the portraits in that I work loosely and mainly from imagination and memory of places I have visited. They are  not based on any particular place as such but a mixture of places and scenes that I have visited. My ideas evolve as I go along. My main focus is the sky and the light which are important to make the paintings work. Painting is a living process and sometimes I am not sure which way the landscapes will go but as I direct the light something happens and I get a semi- realistic work which is almost recognisable as somewhere the viewer may have been.

I spend a lot of time outdoors walking my dogs and these landscapes have evolved from just looking around and being in the moment.
